Spaced Repetition Software: Memrise
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/9/1/26917548/7504134.jpg?493)
The spaced recognition software used by our school is Memrise. Memrise utilizes a planting metaphor, where initial interaction with vocabulary is represented as planting. The spaced repetition learning is symbolized as watering, and the Memrise program can send email reminders to encourage students to return to the program to water their plants. As indicated in the visual below, Memrise provides students with the English word, both written and with audio support, as well as the Chinese character translation.

Relation to Guiding Principles
Principle One ~ Contextualized and Decontextualized Input ~ Memrise helps connect to principle one largely because our instructors have chosen the General Service List and the Academic Word List as the decontextualized source words for student study. These words are important because they focus on high-frequency vocabulary for beginning and low intermediate learners and academic
vocabulary for intermediate and and advanced
students.
Principle Four ~ Fluency Activities ~ Memrise can develop fluency by helping students repeatedly meet known and partially known words through a regular review process, sometimes under time pressure conditions.
Principle Five ~ Enhance Student Motivation ~ The ability for teachers and students to track progress in Memrise, sometimes in a competitive high score type environment, can have a motivational impact to student learning.
Principle Six ~ Develop Effective Strategy Use ~ Although the word lists and use of Memrise by themselves are no guarantee of effective strategy instruction or practice, with explicit teacher instruction and meta-cognitive student reflection, learners will recognize the 'regular review' nature of Memrise as an important vocabulary learning strategy.
Frequency Principle ~ Vocabulary instruction needs to be intentional and organized according to the frequency principle. Memrise takes advantage of opportunities to recycle vocabulary in an intentional way.
