Weekly vocabulary study at our school connects the weekly words students are studying using Memrise with other explicit classroom form-focused instruction. This classroom instruction focuses on the weekly words through the following activities:
- form-focused worksheets
- sentence construction with the focus words
- summative dictation based quizzes on the vocabulary and its various forms
Relation to Guiding Principles
Principle Three ~ Form Focused Instruction ~ The vocabulary related activities using the weekly words connects to the idea that mere exposure to large amounts of communicative input and output does not result in highly accurate language use. Form-focused instruction takes place to help students acquire the L2 lexicon more accurately by overcoming predictable problem areas, such as synforms, interlingual semantic differences, and some collocations.
