Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) as applied by my current school, focuses on several principles.
1. Student are encouraged to choose reading material of interest to them but are guided to select material at a suitable reading level. At the beginning levels of language acquisition, the school is also experimenting with oral sustained reading.
2. Teachers and administrators model SSR on a daily basis.
3. Administration invests time in supervising and monitoring SSR.
4. Students and teachers report on SSR using self and teacher directed rubrics such as the example at left.
Relation to Guiding Principles
Principle One ~ Contextualized and Decontextualized Input ~ Both contextualized and decontextualized input are complementary and mutually reinforcing. SSR focuses on contextualized input through extensive reading.
